Introduction
Embarking on my first triathlon last summer, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. With just six weeks to prepare and unable to swim the full length of a pool, the odds seemed against me. However, quitting was never an option. I quickly formulated a game plan to not only survive but to push my limits in my inaugural race. In this blog post, I will share my experience and the importance of challenging oneself, both physically and mentally, in various aspects of life.
Why I Sign Up for Events Like Triathlons
One question I often encounter is why I choose to participate in events like triathlons. The answer is simple: I schedule challenging activities throughout the year to hold myself accountable. This commitment not only enhances my physical well-being but also carries over into my professional life, relationships, and community involvement. Inspired by one of my mentors, Cory G, who has been following this practice for over 20 years, I discovered the positive impact it has on personal growth and maintaining a competitive edge.
Raising the Bar: The ½ Ironman Challenge
This year, I decided to take things to the next level by signing up for a ½ Ironman in Geneva, NY, on July 7th. Admittedly, I feel a mix of nerves and excitement as the event approaches. However, I have dedicated myself to extensive training and preparation.
Training Routine
To ensure I am ready for the ½ Ironman (triathlon), I follow a carefully crafted training routine. Here’s a breakdown of my weekly schedule:
- Monday: Total Body Upper + Swim
- Tuesday: Track Repeats + Total Body: Lower (Un-Lateral)
- Wednesday: Bike, Barre, Arms
- Thursday: Total Body: Lower (Bi-Lateral)
- Friday: Total Body: Upper
- Saturday: Distance Run
- Sunday: Rest/Recover – Fill in the Gaps
By incorporating a mix of strength training, cardiovascular exercises, and rest days, I optimize my physical performance and minimize the risk of injuries. This well-rounded approach allows me to tackle each discipline of the triathlon with confidence.
Conclusion
In sharing my journey towards completing a ½ Ironman triathlon, I hope to impart valuable lessons and inspire you to step out of your comfort zone. Challenging yourself in various aspects of life can lead to personal growth and improvement in areas such as business, relationships, community engagement, and overall physical and mental well-being. So, push your limits, embrace discomfort, and embark on a transformative journey that will empower you to become the best version of yourself.
